As part of the multiannual research project titled OMPHALOS: Ceremonial Centralities in the Perdigões Archaeological Complex, the 2025 excavation campaign will begin on June 25th and will run until the end of July. In this campaign, the ERA Arqueologia team, supported by Esporão S.A. and the Municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz, will continue excavating Chalcolithic-phase deposits and structures in the central area of Perdigões, particularly the large stone pavement and various contexts covering the stratigraphic sequence that begins with a timber circle, which was partially excavated in previous campaigns.
The objectives are to expand further the planimetric and architectural understanding of this wooden structure, to comprehend its different construction phases, and to obtain more datable material that will allow for chronological referencing of those phases. At the same time, a three-dimensional survey of posthole alignments will be carried out. This information will be used in future proposals for the 3D reconstruction of the different construction phases. Additionally, the excavation of contexts containing human cremation remains—partially covering the foundations of the aforementioned timber circle—will be completed.
